Review of Weller WP35 35w/120v Professional Soldering Iron with 3-Wire Cord

I have used one WP35 for over 40 years, since I was a kid. The only feature that has changed is that it now has a 3-wire AC cord, not 2. It is a "general purpose" soldering pencil with a very unique temperature-controlled tip that has a magnetic shank on the tip. This keeps the tip temperature relatively steady under load.

This model is perfect for soldering wiring, switches, etc. It is *not* the best choice for PCB electronics work because 1) The tip is too large - there is no smaller tip available than 1/16th inch; 2) It delivers too much heat for small electronics components. This fries the tiny parts and unnecessarily cooks the flux. The perfect Weller hobbyist's model for PCB work is the WLC100 that has user-variable temperature and additional 1/32 inch tips.

Pros:
-) Extraordinarily durable.
-) Comfortable to hold for long periods - it's well balanced.

Cons:
-) Does not come with a stand or a sponge, both of which are absolutely necessary if you don't want to go out of your mind. Where do you intend to set down a very hot iron ?
-) The body gets rather hot when left on for more than, say, 20 minutes.
-) The cushy grip will probably disintegrate after 10 to 20 years. (oh well)

I have a discontinued Weller cast iron stand that is also indestructible. Cheaper, lighter plastic stands are readily available. *** The stand's holder opening diametermust be closely matched to the pencil model - don't expect a random model stand to work properly.
