Review of Master Appliance UT-100SIEA Cordless Butane Flameless Soldering Iron / Heat Gun with Fan

If you need a cordless heat gun this unit to get. It is very well made and does the job. I do a lot of specialty wiring and use heat shrink tubing often, the Master Appliance flam-less heat gun offers a focused burst of heat to do the job. Once more, the fan option gives a turbo boost to your work area as heat is available whether the fan is one or off. I'm confused why they call it a soldering iron though.

Review of Aoyue 701A+ Dual Function Soldering and Desoldering Station

I bought the 701 for a home/hobby project that required quite some de-soldering. First impressions of the Ayoue:
-Solid build
-Well packed
-Comes with replacement tips, filters etc.

Initial dislikes:
-A scratch on case
-Missing trimmer cap
-User manual could improve

It looks like Ayoue lacks a little with their quality control. However working with the 701 is fun:
-De-soldering works great
-Nice feel (handling) of the de-soldering gun
-Gun is easy to use (compared to Weller foot pedal)

Dislikes during use:
-Iron holder a little cumbersome (holder for pump-gun is OK)
-Iron handle gets warm (compared to Weller)
-Tossing pumped solder is difficult
-Solder reservoir is too small

All in all, at that price, the Ayoue is unbeatable. If you are on a budget and need a de-soldering station, the 701 is the way to go. I would buy it again.

Review of Aoyue 8032A++ Hand Held Digital Hot Air rework Gun

Review of Cooper Tools GT7A Solid State Soldering Guns, Operating Temp.: 600 F or 700 F

I have owned this since the early 1970s. This gun is ideal for many electronics soldering applications. It is very light weight but heats up quickly. It provides more than enough heat to, for example, solder Amateur Radio antenna connectors. Also great for repairing hand wired circuitry in older radios and automotive soldering.

Because it is temperature controlled it is easy to prevent burning items with too much heat, as is possible with normal soldering irons. This really benefits the quality of the finished product soldered connections. I hesitate to say that this gun makes soldering easy, soldering is an art. But it does make soldering easier.

Be careful, when you are not actively soldering let go of the trigger. If the gun is not actively touching some metal to act as a heat sink it will turn itself up to full temperature and burn out the tip prematurely. Until I discovered this I replaced a few tips. Now they seem to last forever. The tips cost about half of the total price for the entire product. Let go of the trigger when you are not soldering, it will heat back up very quickly when you are ready to solder.

These do cost more than run of the mill guns but there is a reason. This gun is in a class of its own.

Review of NEW SOLDERING IRON STAND HOLDER + SPONGE METAL GUN HOLD

I had been looking for a stand similar to this one for quite a while. Although I could find a reasonably priced stand, the shipping charges were always ridiculous. (One of my biggest pet peeves is spending more for shipping than the actual items costs!) When I saw this one offered for around $10 (including shipping), I pounced! Not a bad deal at all - especially when I've seen these same units for $8-$10, without shipping.

If you can tighten a nut on a bolt, you're able to put it together. Schwing! Easy assembly. This works perfectly with my fine tipped soldering iron and I can almost hear my desk thanking me every time I slide my iron into this stand (rather than trying to carefully balance it in an upside down flower pot). The coild holds the very hot part of my iron securely, so I'm not worried about it being knocked over. And even tho the unit comes with the cheapest little sponge thing I've ever seen, it DID come with a sponge. lol It is easy enough to buy a regular sponge and cut it to the desired size for tinning.

I would recommend this to anyone who wants to protect their furniture when soldering. A great little item at a very reasonable price!

A side note: I bought this from All Top Bargains and I would like to give them a shout out. They have fabulous communication and the fastest shipping I've ever seen with an Amazon store. I am really impressed with this seller and the way they handle things - so if you have the chance to buy this soldering iron stand from All Top Bargains, double bonus!!

Review of SW3 Desoldering Wick

I bought this to work on a project that required removing colored LEDs from a circuit board so I can install white LEDs... so I was removing about 150 connections.

It worked OK at first... it would suck up the old solder but took some poking and prodding to get a good contact. Also, you need a hot iron so you can heat both the solder and the wick (perhaps that was the problem the other guy had???Don't try this with a cheap iron that doesn't get hot... it should be able to very quickly melt the solder)

But then I had a brainstorm... I grabbed some of my flux (the "stuff" you put on before you solder copper pipes together... look in the plumbing section of any hardware) and lightly coated the end of the wick with the flux. This makes it work 30 times better! The flux draws the solder into the wick so fast that its amazing.

Just be careful not to get too much flux on the wick, as it will get all over what you are desoldering as it gets hot.

As you are using it... once the end gets thoroughly coated with old solder just cut off that part and then touch it to the flux and then keep going.

(you might not realize it, but your solder most likely contains a flux core... thats why you don't need it to put down the new solder... but its not there for the old solder so you have to add it to the wick)

Review of Wall Lenk LSP-60 SOLDERPRO 60 2-in-1 Butane Powered Soldering Iron & Blow Torch

I can't tell for sure, but this looks a lot like a radioshack brand torch I bought a while back. It's has a nice adjustable flame that stays lit. It burns a long time too because it holds a lot of butane (for it`s size). I helped a guy put a new door on is car. Why to I need a torch for that? Well he cut all the wires in the door instead of taking them off the various devices and pulling them though the rubber conduit first (DON'T DO THAT!!! Hehehe). Anyway while he transferred all the parts I worked on the door harness. Spent nearly an hour soldering and shrink wrapping I'd say at least 35-40 wires back together. About ¾ the way through it ran out (not bad).

Features (if it is the one I think it is):
Built in wire stand, not vary ridged but works all right. Standard changeable tips, but nowhere to store them. It should come with a flam tip and a tapered round iron tip. Cap with built in flint igniter (just like a cigarette lighter), flint can be changed. Seems the best way is to take a pare of long noise pliers and pull the whole striker assembly out (takes a little force). Once you get it out you "unlatch" the spring, pull it out and the flint should drop out. You can replace with the standard ones you can buy at the drug store.

Nice little torch to have or take with you if you need to solder/heat up/melt something.

Review of Xacto X75170 X-tra Hands with Magnifier

I've started in on a project that requires a lot of small soldering work on circuit boards. My hands aren't very steady so I have difficulty with such small work. Added to that the tiny tiny color bands and markings on components were giving me a head ache trying to decifer them with my unaided eye. This gizmo seemed like the perfect solution to my challenges.

It definately does a great job of holding small components steady for soldering and the adjustability of the arm positions works well. My only complaint is that the magnification is very low. Myabe 2X at best I think. Fortunately my vision just needed a very small boost to help identify the parts without getting eye strain so it works o.k. for me. If you can't see small stuff at all to start with this product may not provide enough magnification to help.

Overall the construction seems to be sturdy and as noted by others the base is good and heavy for its size.

Review of Super Solder Wire 60% 1.0mm Diameter - 1lb Spool

The new "LEAD FREE SOLDER" basically bites. You cannot effectively use it on (new) motherboards. It either rolls right off where you want the solder to adhere, or it takes way too much heat and time to heat to a melting point. So, thank the good Lord that some folks still stock regular ("LEADED")solder!I will definitely be buying more regular solder that isn't "lead free."I got mine from the folks listed here, but you can get it a lot of places on the internet. If you goto your local hardware store and/or even Wallyworld, they may or may not know how to help you out.I find it best to utilize the internet for finding out where to buy stuff online, or who might keep it on the shelves in town.

I can deal with a label or even a stamp warning about dangers involving "lead", (that's in the solder) but they are taking it out of solder, and thats making my job a real challenge. The new kind of solder does NOT work well motherboards. You can take that to the bank.My advice to anyone that works in the industry to get the regular "leaded" type of solder--and stock up on it in case it becomes "UNAVAILABLE" to us!

So, stock up on the "old school" solder if you expect to be working on any motherboards and/or other computer devices which might require solder!

Review of Weller BP645MP Battery Powered Soldering Iron with Batteries

Ever heard of Weller Cold Heat Pro Soldering Tool, Model# CHT100?I did, and I bought one (feel free to read my horrible review on the product's page). What a waste.

So I decided to try again and get this. It's a thousand times better, but still not without it's flaws:

Pros:
1) it doesn't get any more portable
2) works MUCH better than ColdHeat or butane cordless irons
3) It uses a traditional tip that actually GETS HOT when turned on... unlike the Cold Heat, which basically sends current THROUGH your work to heat it up.
4) It's mid-range heat doesn't fry your work. And again, by not zapping your work to heat it up, you don't risk damaging or overheating chips, etc. In fact, I find it a PERFECT heat for circuit boarding -- just hot enough to melt the solder but not to damage the boards.
5) It has a heat-resistant, vented cap you can put on directly after use which even locks-out the on switch to prevent accidental activation in a pocket.

Cons:
1) It does take a long time to warm up, even of fresh batteries.Expect to wait 15-20 seconds holding the button waiting for it to warm up.
2) Batteries don't last too long.
3) It's mid-range temperature doesn't do too well on solder that's been heated and cooled a few times. But then, so does my corded iron.

All in all, I still wholeheartedly recommend the Weller BP645MP!!

Review of Weller PSI100K Portasol Super-Pro Self-Igniting Cordless Butane Soldering Iron Kit

I liked this portable soldering tool. At first it worked. But after a year or two, it would not ignite, regardless as to how much butane was put into it. Why? I'm not certain. But I do know that I work out of a truck as an electronics technician and the change of seasons probably wrecked havoc on the ignitor. My supervisor has about 6 of these in a junk pile in the stockroom from my other coworkers. My suggestion is to look at the SOLDERPRO 70. This one needs only an external spark or an external flame to ignite.

Review of DESOLDERING PUMP

This one works ok, but I found this pump to get clogged with hardened solder easier than other pumps I've used. Maybe mine has a defect or something but it seems that the suction isn't quite what it needs to be to get the solder all the way into the base. Instead it will sometimes get stuck in the rubber tip and after 4 or 5 joints will clog the tip up so the cleaner bar won't go all the way in and you have to take it apart and clean it out to do more.

Review of Weller WP35 35w/120v Professional Soldering Iron with 3-Wire Cord

I have used one WP35 for over 40 years, since I was a kid. The only feature that has changed is that it now has a 3-wire AC cord, not 2. It is a "general purpose" soldering pencil with a very unique temperature-controlled tip that has a magnetic shank on the tip. This keeps the tip temperature relatively steady under load.

This model is perfect for soldering wiring, switches, etc. It is *not* the best choice for PCB electronics work because 1) The tip is too large - there is no smaller tip available than 1/16th inch; 2) It delivers too much heat for small electronics components. This fries the tiny parts and unnecessarily cooks the flux. The perfect Weller hobbyist's model for PCB work is the WLC100 that has user-variable temperature and additional 1/32 inch tips.

Pros:
-) Extraordinarily durable.
-) Comfortable to hold for long periods - it's well balanced.

Cons:
-) Does not come with a stand or a sponge, both of which are absolutely necessary if you don't want to go out of your mind. Where do you intend to set down a very hot iron ?
-) The body gets rather hot when left on for more than, say, 20 minutes.
-) The cushy grip will probably disintegrate after 10 to 20 years. (oh well)

I have a discontinued Weller cast iron stand that is also indestructible. Cheaper, lighter plastic stands are readily available. *** The stand's holder opening diametermust be closely matched to the pencil model - don't expect a random model stand to work properly.

Review of Weller WPS18MP PRO Series High Performance 60-Watt Soldering Iron

I bought this about a month ago to augment my personal toolkit I use in Iraq.I terminate a lot of radio cables, but need something that's fast to heat up and has a reasonable cool-down because of the random nature of when I need it.

Pros:
Heats up fast, and tells you when it's ready.

Excellent ergonomics.Soldering a pin onto a cable (especially with a 90 degree connector) is a very precise task. The soldering guns we have (TK-101/GSQ component, Weller GT7As) have huge tips not suitable for the work, and holding the trigger is annoying. The shape conforms to your hand well and lets you get it into tight spaces like a 90 degree connector's pin well easily.

Quick-change tip lets me separate the parts effortlessly in my toolbag so the tip sits in a pocket instead of the main area.

Con:
Only real one is personal preference; I don't like using the conical tips. They don't hold the solder well and get degraded faster than chisel tips.Being able to hold a small bead of solder and insert it into the hole in the pin is the ideal method when doing RG58, because holding longer will heat and expand the dielectric. If it came with both tips that would have been great, but not a major concern.

Overall, this is a great tool.

Review of Mastech 60 Watts Soldering Iron, UL listed

Great price for a 60W iron, cheapest I could find. Does its job well enough, even though it smokes a little sometimes from between the tip and barrel (it did this before I first used solder, so it's really the iron that is smoking, but it's really minimal).

Review of Weller P2KC Portasol Professional Self-igniting Cordless Butane Soldering Iron Kit

Wow I am impressed. I spent the last three days on the roof of my house putting up ham radio antenna systems. I needed to solder many conections, unsolder them and resolder them as I was triming antenna to resonant length. This tool is really good. I am showing it to everyone who comes in the house. The hot torch tip is useful to unsolder large-wire connections, the type that seems to suck up all the heat of a normal soldering iron. The iron heats up almost instantly, I have never had a failed start when I click the start button. There is a wire fashioned tool holder that I haven't quite figured out how it is supposed to hold something. This is a real tool for real jobs.
